What is the difference between ChatGPT and Atlas?
ChatGPT is a conversation with an AI assistant. You ask, it answers, and you decide what to do with the answer. That simple design is a real strength, and it is widely used.
Atlas Intelligent Workspace is an AI workspace. Docs, Notebook, Sheets, Boards, Tasks, Calendar and Gmail sit in one place, with chat, ready-made apps and agents on top. The goal is that the result of a job is a change in your own files, calendar or inbox, not only text in a conversation.
| ChatGPT | Atlas | |
|---|---|---|
| Built around | A conversation with an AI assistant. | A workspace: documents, spreadsheets, boards, tasks, calendar and mail, with agents working inside them. |
| Strong at | Quick answers, brainstorming, writing help, learning and general questions. | Jobs that end in your files, calendar or inbox, and jobs that repeat on a schedule. |
| Where results end up | Starts in the conversation. What it can connect to varies, so check its current features. | In your own Docs, Sheets, Boards, Tasks, Calendar and Gmail drafts, with a record in Activity. |
| Email and calendar | Varies. Check ChatGPT's current features. | Google Calendar, Gmail and Drive, which you choose to connect. Email to anyone else asks first. |
| Scheduled jobs | Varies. Check ChatGPT's current features. | Agents you describe once. They can run every morning at 8, every evening at 9, every Friday or when something arrives. |
| Approvals and Undo | Varies. Check ChatGPT's current features. | Four levels, checked by the server. An approval card, receipts and Undo in Activity. |
| Privacy controls | Varies. Check ChatGPT's current settings. | Atlas Shield hides private details before the AI sees them. Export or delete everything from Settings. |

What does a ChatGPT alternative that does the work look like?
It starts from the job, not the question. In Atlas you describe a job once, in plain words, for example: every Friday, chase the invoices I have not been paid for. The job becomes an agent with a name, a picture and a schedule. It works across Docs, Sheets, Boards, files, Calendar and Gmail in one run.
Before anything runs for real, Atlas tries the job out on last week's work, and nothing runs until you turn it on. Agents run on a server, so they keep their schedule when you close the page, and each run keeps a trace of what happened.
Is there an AI that takes action, and who is in control?
An AI that takes action needs clear rules about what it may do alone. In Atlas every action has one of four levels, checked by the server before it runs.
- Does it. Reads your calendar and mail, sets a reminder, looks things up.
- Does it, then tells you. Moves a task, adds an event only you are in. Each comes with a receipt and Undo.
- Asks you first. Email to anyone else and invites with guests, unless you gave a standing yes for that job.
- Never. Paying or buying for you, and deleting anything for good.
A yes is signed by the server, and the tool that would act refuses without the signature. The rules are enforced in code, not just written into a prompt. Read the four levels on the Trust page for the full list.
Can Atlas work as ChatGPT for email and calendar?
For the Google side of your week, yes. Atlas connects to Google Calendar, Gmail and Drive, and you choose what to connect. It reads the mail you allow, drafts replies, and turns mail into tasks or calendar events with your OK. It shows your week, lets you plan tasks into free time, and lets you add or move your own events. Invites with guests ask first.
There is no connection to other mail or calendar providers, so if you do not use Google, Atlas is not the right fit. See the AI email assistant and the AI calendar planner pages for the step-by-step.
When is ChatGPT the better choice?
Often. If your day is mostly thinking out loud, ChatGPT is a simple and strong choice.
- You want a quick answer to a general question.
- You are brainstorming names, ideas or options.
- You want help writing or editing a message, a post or a report.
- You are learning something and want to keep asking follow-ups.
- You already use it daily and it covers what you need.
You can use both: a chat assistant to think, and a workspace for jobs that end in files, calendars and inboxes. For a fuller look, read ChatGPT vs an AI workspace.
How do you try Atlas?
Atlas is in private beta. You can join the beta, connect only what you want, and give it one real job to start. See the Product page for every part of the workspace, and how agents work if the jobs are what interest you.
